Crime Rates in Beijing
Overall, Beijing is considered quite safe, especially concerning violent crime. Compared to many large cities around the world, violent crime rates are notably low. Petty crime, however, does exist. This mostly involves pickpocketing and purse-snatching, particularly in crowded areas or on public transport during peak hours. While official detailed statistics aren’t always public in the same way they are in some Western countries, major international safety assessments generally rate Beijing as having a low risk for most types of crime.
Common Scams and Petty Theft
Be aware of a few common scams targeting visitors. The “tea ceremony” or “art student” scam is well-known: someone friendly approaches you, often near tourist sites or universities, invites you for tea or to view art, and then presents you with a highly inflated bill. Always be cautious of overly friendly strangers initiating contact out of the blue, especially if they immediately suggest going somewhere private or off the beaten path. Pickpocketing remains a risk in busy markets, crowded subway cars, and tourist hotspots like the Forbidden City or the Great Wall sections near the city. Keep your valuables secure and out of easy reach.
Public Transport and Popular Areas
Beijing’s public transport system, especially the extensive metro network, is widely used and generally safe. The main issue is crowding during rush hour, which also increases the risk of petty theft. Buses can be similarly crowded. Taxis are widely available, and using official taxis (which can be flagged or booked via apps like DiDi) is generally safe. Beijing is generally very safe for solo travelers, both men and women. It’s common to see people out and about alone, even late at night, especially in more populated areas. Walking alone on streets in well-lit, busy parts of the city is typically not an issue. The low rate of violent crime contributes significantly to this feeling of safety.
Local Laws and Safety Rules
Laws in China are strict, particularly regarding drugs – penalties are severe. Political expression is tightly controlled, and it’s advisable to avoid engaging in political discussions or activities that could be perceived as critical of the government. While not strictly a law, there are unwritten social rules about navigating crowds; personal space is often less than you might be used to, particularly on transport or in queues. Respecting local customs and rules around public order is important.

Emergency services are available and generally responsive in Beijing. You can contact the police by dialing 110, for fire dial 119, and for medical emergencies (ambulance) dial 120. While services are reliable, communication can be a challenge if you do not speak Mandarin. It’s helpful to have a translation app or the assistance of a Mandarin speaker if you need to contact emergency services. Having your location details ready in Mandarin can also speed things up.
